Curatorial Statement |
This trophy exemplifies the relationship between art, agriculture and commerce as Chicago developed in the early twentieth century. In 1900, the International Livestock Exposition replaced the older "fat stock" show as an annual demonstration of ideal livestock. The Union Stock Yards and Transit Company, which commissioned this trophy, helped build Chicago into a national center of meatpacking at the turn of the century. Robert Jarvie produced a range of items, including this trophy, in his workshop by the Union Stock Yards. The trophy demonstrates the natural design espoused by the Arts and Crafts Movement. |
