Hart, Schaffner & Marx is a Chicago company dating back to 1872 when two brothers, Harry and Max Hart, opened a men's clothing store on State Street. Their wholesale operations eventually replaced their retail sales, which led them to contracts with the U.S. military. By the turn of the twentieth century, Hart, Schaffner & Marx was established as a premium brand.
