Curatorial Statement
Before pantyhose became widely available in the 1960s, stockings needed support at the top to stay in place. Garters were either worn around the thigh or around the waist with straps that clipped onto the stockings. The garter is still widely used in weddings, but primarily as a tradition rather than as a functional accessory.
