Bernard Biernacki was born in Chicago and lived in the Bridgeport community area until his marriage in the mid-1970s. At that point, he and his wife moved to west suburban Aurora. While studying journalism at Southern Illinois University, Mr. Biernacki traveled to Chicago to experience the Democratic National Convention. Quickly realizing the crowds were getting "out-of-hand" he positioned himself out of harm's way to watch. He did not want to be a part of the protest, but, as a student of journalism, he wanted to experience what was happening around him. He felt as if the Chicago police "lost it" or "snapped."
