Catherine Rategan was born in Chicago in 1932 and grew up in the Austin community area. Her mother was a homemaker and her father represented their home district in the state legislature. In 1968, Ms. Rategan lived in the Old Town neighborhood and was rekindling an interest in politics. After the violence outside of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) Wednesday night, Ms. Rategan headed to Lincoln Park but did not make it because of a near-miss encounter with police. She recalls her own disillusionment with police during the time of the DNC. Ms. Rategan did not attend any other demonstrations or any actual convention events.
