Collection Summary +/-

Correspondence, notes, reports, photographs, and other files compiled by Ezra J. Warner while researching his two published reference books on American Civil War leaders: Generals in Gray (Louisiana State University Press, 1959) and Generals in Blue (1964). Files relating to each book are arranged alphabetically by the name of the general and include biographical information, such as birth and death dates and locations, burial location, schools attended, names of relatives, and sometimes notes on Warner's visit to the grave site. Other material includes research files on the Todd family (in-laws of President Lincoln), the West Point military academy class of 1860, photographs for potential use in Generals in Blue; press clippings about the publications, and correspondence with the publisher and with descendants of the generals.

Biographical/Historical Note +/-

Ezra J. Warner (1910-1975) was a businessman and Civil War historian who was born in Lake Forest, Illinois, and resided in La Jolla, California. He spent years meticulously researching and writing two biographical reference books on Civil War generals that were published by Louisiana State University. Generals in Gray was published in 1959, followed by Generals in Blue in 1964. The books provide biographies of all of the regular, full generals of the American Civil War: 425 Confederate and 583 Union generals. They also list officers brevetted as generals. Warner was employed as an investment counselor in La Jolla, California.
