Collection Summary +/-

This collection contains correspondence, scrapbooks, newspapers, newspaper clippings, certificates, plaques, audio recordings, and other papers belonging to Chicago philanthropist and hotel executive Albert Pick, Jr. and to his family. Much of the collection consists of commemorative certificates, plaques, and scrapbooks presented to Albert Pick, Jr. Also present are items pertaining to Pick family history and printed materials about the Pick Hotels Corporation, including a few issues of a newsletter entitled "Pick Topicks."

Biographical/Historical Note +/-

Albert Pick, Jr. (1895-1977), born Isidore Pick, was a Chicago businessman, hotel executive, and philanthropist. Pick served as president, and later chairman of the board, of the Pick Hotels Corporation, a family business co-founded by Pick, his father, and other family members. Pick was also a prominent philanthropist who contributed funds to many institutions, including the La Rabida Children's Hospital (also known as La Rabida Jackson Park Sanitarium), the University of Chicago, and Northwestern University. In 1947, Pick established the Albert Pick, Jr. Fund, which awards grants to nonprofit organizations located in the city of Chicago. Pick was a trustee of the University of Chicago and the La Rabida Children's Hospital. In 1967, former president Eisenhower named Pick director of People to People International.
