Provenance statement:
The main body of the Paul M. Angle papers was acquired by Chicago Historical Society in 1975 (accession #: M1975.0037). An addition to the papers was a gift of Mrs. Paul Angle (accession #: M1982.0059). Three honorary doctorate certificates from Illinois colleges (1941, 1944, 1965), four commencement programs (1941, 1947, 1965), and one commencement speech honoring Angle (1965) were a gift of John Angle (accession #: 1995.0206).

Manuscripts, research material, correspondence, articles, newspaper clippings, speeches, and other papers of Paul M. Angle, a historian and author. The collection consists largely of reference material for Angle's books and articles, including notes and photocopies of newspaper articles from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as well as correspondence with other historians, including Carl Sandburg, Allan Nevins, and James G. Randall. Also present is material on Philip K. Wrigley, Abraham Lincoln, and Illinois history. Other items include manuscript drafts, book reviews written by Angle for the Chicago Tribune (1948-1967), and papers from Angle's years as director of the Chicago Historical Society (1945-1965). Manuscript drafts include Bloody Williamson: A Chapter in American Lawlessness (1952) and Philip K. Wrigley: A Memoir of a Modest Man (1975).
Biographical/Historical Note +/-
Paul M. Angle (1900-1975), historian and author, was secretary of the Abraham Lincoln Association (1925-1932), staff member of the Illinois State Historical Society (1932-1945), and director of the Chicago Historical Society (1945-1965). Angle was an Abraham Lincoln scholar and wrote several books on Lincoln and Illinois history, including The Lincoln Reader (1947), Bloody Williamson: A Chapter in American Lawlessness (1952), and 'Here I Have Lived': A History of Lincoln's Springfield, 1821-1865 (1971).
