Collection Summary +/-

Correspondence, newspaper clippings, manuscripts, photographs, marketing materials, exhibition labels, press materials, and publications relating to the brothers Stephen Deutch and Alfred Deutch, who were graphic artists and photographers. Materials primarily concern their lives and work while residing in Chicago (Ill.). Alfred died in 1931, but Stephen had a long and successful career as a commercial photographer and artist. Published work in this collection documents the fine art and commercial work of each brother, especially Stephen's later published work (1970s-1990s). Notable items include exhibition label text, contact sheet prints of Stephen's photographs, layout designs, and many issues of the magazine Coronet (1930s), in which Stephen's work appeared. Also present are ten audio cassette tapes related to Stephen's exhibitions and career, including an interview with Studs Terkel and Stephen's remembrances of Nelson Algren.

Biographical/Historical Note +/-

The Deutch brothers were born in Budapest, Hungary, Stephen in 1908 and Alfred in 1902. Moving to Chicago in the 1920s, Alfred worked as a graphic artist for local clients such as the magazine the Chicagoan but did not attain a high degree of commercial success. Alfred died in 1931. Stephen resided in Paris with his wife Helena, a professional photographer, until coming to Chicago ca. 1936. Already an established photographer, he opened one of the most successful studios in the city. Stephen's fine art photography appeared in magazines such as Coronet, Ebony, Saturday Evening Post, and Popular Photography. He worked as a commercial photographer for such major corporations as Marshall Field & Company, First National Bank of Chicago, Abbott Laboratories, the Container Corporation of America, and many others. He was a longtime friend of Nelson Algren and Studs Terkel. Stephen died in 1997.
