Coat, evening-style, of light brown wool crepe. Collarless, with clutch closure. Three-quarter length sleeves; horizontal pin tucks create a vertebral pattern on upper side of sleeves. Side seam left open on both sides from armscye to hem. Falls to mid-thigh. Black taffeta lining.
Worn by Kathleen Catlin, née Kathleen Tharaldsen. Cristóbal Balenciaga appealed primarily to connoisseurs of fashion who understood his style of avant garde classicism. One of Balenciaga's most successful 1950 designs, this wrap appeared in numerous fashion magazines worldwide. Although this garment does not have a label, Mrs. Catlin recalled purchasing it at the Parisian fashion shows in 1950. It was not uncommon for designer labels to be removed from expensive garments purchased in Europe, allowing American clients to avoid paying import tax upon returning home.
