Object History | Worn by donor (née Helen Tieken, b. 1902), on occasion of her marriage to Maurice Patrick Geraghty on April 15, 1933. Mrs. Geraghty graduated from the University of Chicago, Phi Beta Kappa in 1923 and later received her Master's degree there. She studied abroad at the Sorbonne and Oxford. At the time of her wedding, she was the director and manager of Junior League Players . The wedding took place at her parents' apartment at 223 E. Delaware Place in Chicago. The flowers were orchids. |
Curatorial Statement | Jacques was a custom dressmaking salon in Chicago that specialized in women's special-occasion and evening wear. The Museum has only a few examples of designs from Jacques, but each is exquisitely made with interesting patterns, as seen in the circular cut of this gown's sleeves. Small marks on the stomach area of the gown suggest that either a long necklace or a bracelet was worn with the ensemble, which snagged the fabric. |
