Dress, evening-style, of floral-print taffeta in white, black, and light and dark brown. Sleeveless fitted bodice with bateau neckline; full floor-length skirt. Fitted girdle and attached petticoat (b) in white tulle.
Object was donated and worn by dancer and choreographer Ruth Page (Mrs. Thomas Hart Fisher).
The bell-shaped skirt and overall silhouette of this dress requires a complex understructure to support the shape. The dress's understructure is made up of nine layers of gathered net, all stitched to a torso-length girdle. This understructure provides the shape of the skirt, cinching the waist and torso while providing support for the breasts. The wearer simply "stepped in" to the gown to be ready for the evening.
