Dress of brown tulle embroidered with gold-colored beads and sequins. Fitted bodice with thin sequined shoulder straps (added later); burgundy silk velvet band at bust forms a bow at center front; natural waist. Space between sequins expands down the skirt to eventually become crescent moon shapes; voluminous conical skirt. Calf-length (shortened from original).
This gown illustrates the way a dress can transform over time. The dress today shows many alterations from its original state. The hem of the skirt has been shortened by about seven inches. The sides have been let out and then re-embroidered with beads and sequins that no longer match the original color. The original two-sided, brown velvet bow was adapted to fit around a larger torso. Finally, two shoulder straps were added and embellished with more non-matching sequins. Although greatly altered from its original design, the dress still offers much of its original splendor.
