Physical Description | Evening dress ensemble; five piece, of dark red velvet with matching acessories: a) evening dress, strapless; top of bodice trimmed with red velvet balls dotted with silver sequins and silver beads, and gold and silver beads; fitted waist; full, floor length skirt: b) belt, thin of matching material; c) choker; of red velvet with red velvet ball and bead trim; d-e) bracelets; pair, of red velvet with red ball and bead trim. |

Object History | Worn by Mrs. A. Watson Armour III (née Jean Schweppe) to the "400" party on December 10, 1948, in Chicago's private club, The Casino, located at 195 E Delaware Pl, Chicago, IL 60611. A photograph of the donor wearing this dress at the "400" party with William Douglas was published in the Making Mainbocher catalog (2016) page 60. |
Curatorial Statement | Mainbocher introduced the strapless silhouette as part of his collections as early as 1934. By the 1940s, he was regularly using it in his evening wear and by the 1950s, this particular silhouette had become a fashion staple. |
