Object History | Worn by the donor, Peggy Stanley (b. 1911) |
Curatorial Statement | During World War II, the United States government applied restrictions on the types and amounts of fabrics that could be used in clothing manufacturing. Fashion designers adapted their designs accordingly. In response, Mainbocher created a collection of interchangeable "dress aprons" which were worn over simple cocktail or evening dresses to update the existing look. He later updated this concept by integrating aprons into his designs, as seen with this garment. |
