Curatorial Statement | Mainbocher experienced unprecedented success as an American couturier in Paris. A prism of ambition, precision, and sophistication shaped his work, making Mainbocher the "most American of the French labels" and the "most French of the American labels." Mainbocher presented the strapless gown as early as 1934, but the style didn't gain popularity until the 1950s. Today, the look is used worldwide for wedding gowns, formal ensembles, and cocktail dresses. |
