Object History | The donor, Susan Alexander purchased this mini-dress at the Paraphernalia Boutique in 900 block of North Michigan Avenue. She wore the dress to spring and summer parties that same year. Ms. Alexander recalls, "This dress was the shortest one I'd ever worn. When I showed it to my mother, she was appalled and commented, "That's not a dress, that's a tunic." |
Curatorial Statement | Walter Holmes opened his Chicago salon Walter Holmes Inc. at 134 E. Delaware in the Fall of 1963. He created this collection "mediaeval minis" under the label 'Paraphernalia' in 1968. Much to the irritation of the Catholic Church, Holmes created looks inspired by nun's habits pairing them with mini dresses. The following year, Holmes went on to create designs for the flight attendants of Hugh Hefner's bunny plane which lead to a job as the men's fashion editor of Playboy magazine in the 1970s. |
