Eva Strucker made this quilt in the early 1880s before she married using materials near to her hand and heart. Bordered with delicate blue and white checked cotton, this intricate patchwork quilt is pieced entirely of one inch multi-colored squares. What makes those squares unique is that all but the yellow are scraps from the dresses of her immediate family members.Quilt makers often used the fabrics of family members clothing, from siblings to children, not just as raw material but to increase the meaning of the quilt. In such instances, quilts were not only beautiful, useful objects but ways of sparking family memories and keeping loved ones close.
