Curatorial Statement | Marie Plamondon’s parents were prominent Chicagoans who died aboard the Lusitania, a passenger ship torpedoed in the Atlantic Ocean by a German U-boat before the United States entered war. Seeking solace from her loss, Plamondon spent more and more time at the Madonna Center, an Italian settlement house where Catholics in the Taylor Street district donated their time and work to the Red Cross. She wore this Red Cross uniform during her service in the First World War from about 1917 to 1918. |
