Object History
In 1861, he was appointed Colonel of a regiment of Zouaves and was shot by the proprietor of a hotel in Alexandria, Virginia while tearing down a Confederate flag from the hotel.
Subject Description
The composition shows Ellsworth on the stairway with Confederate flag being shot by the proprietor of the hotel. Three other figures and one obscure figure appear on the stairway.
