Curatorial Statement | Mrs. Lucy Linn donated this dress to the museum in 1952. Although it does not have a label, catalogue records attributed the design to Madeleine Vionnet, one of Mrs. Linn's favorite designers. To authenticate the history of this piece, Betty Kirke, the leading historian on the life and work of Vionnet, studied the garment and concluded that it was made by Vionnet's former assistant, Marcelle Chaumont, who inherited Vionnet's business in 1938. To acquire this garment, Mrs. Linn would have traveled to Paris for the fittings. During research, staff discovered that she made two trips to Europe in the late 1930s. |
