Object History | This striking cocktail dress, designed by the innovative fashion designer, Thierry Mugler, was a gift to the Museum from Mrs. Ellen Ross, a former Chicago model. Mrs. Ross purchased the dress at Stanley Korshak a few years before it closed. Stanley Korshak, known as "one of the city's most fashionable and expensive retailers" was a pillar of the Chicago apparel industry. Korshak's began selling luxury and one-of-a-kind goods in 1909, opening its last and perhaps most prominent location within One Magnificent Mile in 1983. The store closed in 1990 and reopened in Dallas under new ownership. This dress was purchased by Mrs. Ross at Korshak, in September 1986. She wore it to the 1986 Costume Council's Donors' Ball and Fashion Show as well as the 1987 Children’s Home & Aid Society Ball. Mrs. Ross wore the dress for a final time in the 1988 Chicago History Museum's Costume Council’s Donors Ball and Fashion Show. |
Curatorial Statement | French fashion designer, Thierry Mugler has experimented with the use of lamé in his designs since the late 1970s. His work is often revered for its striking and erotic aesthetic while remaining amusing and at times, unnerving. His mastery of cut and construction are evident in the sculptural and asymmetrical design of this dress. |
