Object History | A trader at the Chicago Board of Trade wore these platform shoes. The donor, Norbert A. Klucikowski, has worked at the Chicago Board of Trade as a trader/broker in the 30-year bond pit since 1990. He wore this pair of platform shoes to elevate his height to stand out and be easily recognized on the trading floor. The donor purchased the shoes and later had a cobbler thicken the shoes by adding platform soles. |
Curatorial Statement | In need of a boost, Norbert A. Klucikowski, a trader/broker at the Chicago Board of Trade wore these platform shoes in the 30-year bond pit since 1990. Founded in 1848, the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) introduced the revolutionary concept of futures trading during the Civil War. Widely used today, the process obligates the seller to deliver specific goods at stipulated prices sometime in the future. Today, CBOT traders exchange fifty different types of futures and option products through open auction or electronically. As a reminder of CBOT>'s origins, a gleaming figure of Ceres, the Greek goddess of grain, sits on top of its current building, overlooking the city and surrounding region. |
