Portrait of Joseph Medill (1823-1899) head and shoulders, facing left. He is in a dark suit, white shirt and black cravat. He has brown curly hair. Medill married Katherine Patrick of Ohio in 1852. In 1855 he became editor of the Chicago Tribune and one of the three owners of the paper. He was a friend of Abraham Lincoln. Elected to the Illinois Constitutional Assembly in 1870. His paper was an ardent supporter of Lincoln's 1860 presidential campaign. Eight weeks after the Chicago Fire of 1871 he assumed his duties as Mayor of Chicago.
