Peach colored triangular shape with wide scalloped border of lavender taffeta; large black winged dragon in center surrounded by motto "Quod Semper, Quod Ubique, Quod Abomnibus"
Original regulation flag of the Ku Klux Association of the South, flown at the headquarters at Columbia, TN
Subject Description
The flag depicts a winged dragon below the Latin motto, "Quod Semper, Quod Ubique, Quod Abomnibus" which translated means: what always, what everywhere, what by all (is held to be true).
Curatorial Statement
This flag is a document of the early Ku Klux Klan active during Reconstruction. Founded in Tennessee in 1866, the organization quickly spread to other southern states and used acts of violence and intimidation to defend white supremacy, oppose expanded rights for recently emancipated blacks, and eradicate the Republican Party. The Reconstruction Klan was short-lived and in most states disbanded by the early 1870s.
