Kerosene lamp carried in Chicago in the "Wide Awakes" Lincoln presidential campaign, 1860. Set in yoke so that it can carried on a pole without being tipped. Wick and pole not original.
Curatorial Statement
The Wide Awakes, political clubs organized to support the candidacy of Abraham Lincoln, were active in all of the Northern states. They stage dramatic nighttime parades, carrying kerosene torches that lit up the sky and wooden axes to recall Lincoln’s frontier youth.
