Physical Description | Carriage painted black with line trim. Extensively restored, the carriage has two doors with windows, two rounded front windows with one rectangular window in center, and one small window in the back. Below windows on the doors are interlaced initials "AL." |

Object History | Abraham Lincoln purchased this carriage in New York City, en route to his first inaugural in Washington, D.C. Lincoln purchased the carriage for his family's use and it was later used by his widow, Mary Lincoln, in Chicago, Illinois. |
Curatorial Statement | Made by the premier carriage maker in America, Lincoln's carriage is beautifully elegant but lacks the ornate styling of carriages owned by European royalty. |
