Gold-plated cornet with 3 valves. Serial No. 929. This cornet was made in 1927. However, the bell section extending to the connection with the first valve is not original, but was replaced sometime between 1953-1963, presumably after the original bell was damaged.

This cornet was given by Bix Biederbecke to Jimmy McPartland, a member of the Austin High School Gang, a 1920s Chicago jazz group.
This cornet belonged to Jimmy McPartland. McPartland and other Austin High Gang members, Bud Freeman (saxophone), Jim Lanigan (string bass/tuba), Dick McPartland (banjo/guitar), Dave North (piano), Frank Teschemacher (clarinet), and Dave Tough became famous musicians after learning their musical trade by listening to artists like Louis Armstrong and Joseph King Oliver play in nightclubs on Chicago's south side.
