This leather football was used in the game between the University of Chicago and Northwestern University on November 14, 1896. This was the first football game between the two universities as part of the then-newly formed National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Big Ten Conference. The Big Ten was founded in Chicago at the Palmer House in January 1896. This football was used during the first season that conference rules were in effect. The University of Chicago and Northwestern University were founding members of the conference.
