Dress (a) of light cream silk jacquard, high neckline, drop shoulder, short sleeves, tight bodice, and full floor-length skirt. Center front hook and eye closure. Extra bodice (b) is of same material but has wide, low neckline. No label.
Worn by Sarah Seymour when she married William Blair on June 21, 1854.
Curatorial Statement
Throughout the nineteenth century, wedding ensembles were often made with separate but interchangeable parts that allowed one garment to be worn for different occasions. As in this case, Sarah Seymour's wedding dress was made with a bodice with an open neckline for evening. The second, high-neck bodice with the skirt would have been appropriate for daytime.
