Two-piece dress of black silk faille. Bodice (a) is fitted, with a square neckline. Sleeveless, with 2" wide straps. Long, hip-length peplum. Center back zipper closure. Skirt (b) is voluminous, with wide pleating. Center back hook-and-eye closure. Falls below the knee.
This dress was worn by the donor, Mrs. Henry D. Paschen (Maria Tallchief). Although the donor does not remember altering this garment, there are signs of alterations throughout the bodice, waist and skirt hem. The original lining to the bodice has been replaced with a sheer fabric allowing visibility of the interior craftsmanship and alterations. A fine piece of twine and a metal "seal" hangs from the interior side seam, which signifies that import tax was paid on this garment. Without the removal of the original lining, this seal would not be visible. This is the only dress in the museum's Dior collection that still contains the import tax seal.
