Coat of white silk moiré. Embroidered with white silk thread and opaque crystal beads. Wide, bell-shaped sleeves. Hip length; back curves out to allow for bustle on wearer's dress. White silk fringe at edges of sleeves and jacket hem. Lined with quilted white surah.
Mrs. Palmer wore this coat in her early twenties shortly after her marriage to Potter Palmer in 1870. This is the oldest item of clothing of Mrs. Palmer's in the museum's collection. The exquisite textile, embroidery and custom fit show Mrs. Palmer's interest in fine dressmaking that became her signature style.
