Physical Description | Dress (a) of light orange pink silk knit. Deep V-neck surrounded by V-shaped openwork inset from shoulders to waist. Set-in, fitted sleeves; wrist-length. Floor-length skirt is trimmed with four wedge-shaped openwork insets. Center back zipper. Hat (b) consisiting of two crossed bands of net with petal-shaped ends. One band trimmed entirely with pearls; the other with pearls and rhinestones. Finished with light gray grosgrain and and plastic comb. Veil (c) of off white net trimmed with rhinestones. |

Object History | Purchased by the donor, (née Marie Campbell, subsequently Marie Campbell Crane), at I. Magnin for $500. Worn at her wedding to Judge Walter J. Cummings on September 6, 1975 at Holy Name Cathedral, Lady Chapel, and Reception at the Tavern Club. The hat was designed especially for the donor for her wedding. |
Curatorial Statement | Beginning with the hippie culture of the late 1960s, fashion started to reflect ethnic and historic styles and techniques as a way to break from mainstream culture. Hungarian-born Mady Gerard became an internationally famous fashion designer during the 1970s for her hand-knit and crocheted designs. |
