Object History | Worn by the donor's Mother, Mrs. Charles DeWitt O'Kieffe, Jr., née Mary Louise Wright, as a wedding dress in a civil ceremony December 31, 1927, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Mary Louise Wright was born January 12, 1906 and died November 13, 1985. Charles Dewitt "Jack" O'Kieffe, Jr. was born in 1906 and died April 19, 1979. |
Curatorial Statement | The heavy bead-and-thread embroidery of this dress was not only decorative but functional as it helped keep the light silk crepe from blowing in the wind and exposing the wearer. Heavy embellishment on such light material is one reason why flapper gowns in good condition are so rare: in some cases, even after only a few wears, the weight of the embroidery damaged the garment. |
