Physical Description | Dress (a) of gold-colored lamé. Fitted bodice with square neckline; sleeveless. Diagonal pleating across bodice. Pleated skirt over attached taffeta and tulle petticoats. Back zip closure. Mid-calf length. Jacket (b) of off white and gold-colored lamé brocade. Shawl collar; elbow sleeves. No closure. Slightly shorter than dress. |

Object History | Worn by donor's aunt, Frances Abrams McCall, at her second wedding. Was originally worn with a very thin belt. |
Curatorial Statement | A tight waist and full skirt, filled out by layers of petticoats, was a common silhouette throughout the 1950s and early 1960s. Girdles were built directly into many cocktail and evening gowns. A woman could step into the dress and, once zipped closed, be fully supported by its internal structure. |
