Object History | Worn by donor, née Grace Dickerman Vogel on the occasion of her first marriage to Michael Hartman Finnell on September 11, 1954 at St. Charles Episcopal Church in Milwaukee, WI. The dress was designed by Priscilla of Boston to incorporate lace from several gowns. It was subsequently worn by the donor's sister, Mrs. Walter Gray Mattern, Jr. on January, 1959 and by the donor's daughter, Mrs. Frederick Clifford Blanchard, Jr. on September 12, 1981. |
Curatorial Statement | In 1945, Priscilla Kidder opened the Bride's Shop in Boston, and today Priscilla of Boston is one of the most successful bridal boutiques in the country. In 1956, Grace Kelly wore a Priscilla of Boston gown when she married Prince Rainier III of Monaco, popularizing the brand. This gown was worn by three women between 1954 and 1981 and was then donated to the Chicago History Museum in 1990. Each new bride slightly altered the gown to fit her size and desired look. A series of twenty-two internal ties allow the gown to be shortened to a more manageable length. |
