| Object History | Margaret Heing (b. 2/24/1911) wore this Navy WAVES uniform designed by Mainbocher when she married Mortimer Abramson on February 1, 1947. Margaret's family had been in Chicago since the 1840s and she graduated from DePaul University in 1933. She joined the WAVES in December of 1942 and served in Charleston, South Carolina, and at a Navy submarine base in New London, Connecticut. Margaret was in charge of Navy relief, helping families of servicemen and was also in charge of labor relations for women who worked in the Navy Yard. When she was discharged in October of 1946, she had attained the rank of Lieutenant. |
| Curatorial Statement | It was, and still is, very common for military personnel to wear their uniforms to their weddings. During the war, this practice was not only out of pride but also out of necessity, as wedding fabric, clothing, and accessories were less available because of war-time rationing. |
