| Description | Dress (a) of white silk. High sweetheart neckline; gathered between breasts and decorated with five rosettes in a vertical line. Long, fitted sleeves with puffed shoulders. High-waisted 6-gore skirt with lace inserts. Lace at back waist. Floor-length with train. Veil (b) has two layers of netting gathered into a headband of orange blossoms; falls to waist. |

| Object History | Worn by donor's mother Elise Marie Roach (born February 19, 1921) at her wedding to John Edward Cummens at the Chicago Lawn Methodist Church (63rd Street and St. Louis Avenue) on October 15, 1941. She purchased the dress at a shop near the intersection of 63rd Street and Kedzie Avenue in Chicago for about $75. The couple had three children, John Albert, James Edward (born 1948) and Elizabeth Jeanne (born August 15, 1952). Elizabeth "Beth" Jankowski (née Cummens) wore the dress for a second time to her wedding at the Chicago Lawn Methodist Church on July 15, 1973. |
| Curatorial Statement | This gown was purchased at a dressmaker's shop at 63rd Street and St. Louis Avenue in Chicago for $75. Originally worn in 1941, the dress was worn again by the couple's daughter in 1973. Although the dress remains in good condition, the original seams around the waist were taken apart and re-sewn to a smaller size, while the zipper was relocated from the side seam to the center back neck. |
