Chiffon over layer drapes over shoulders and comes together at center waist where three braided satin rosettes catch the fabric on dress' left side. Chiffon layer terminates at the knee with an approx. 7" band of embroidery. Attached train of gray satin extends from back waist of under layer. b) Calf-length gray chiffon jacket with panels of soutache braid embroidery in panels across the bust, bands around the sleeves and in panels in the front extending up from the hem (1-2'). Same braid embroidery extends to encircle the back hem of jacket as a 6" band. | Object History | Worn by Mrs. John de Koven (neƩ Helen Haddock, 1836-1886) to wedding of her son Cecil Barnes and Margaret Ayer, May 21, 1910 at Saint James Episcopal Church, Cass and Huron Streets, Chicago. |
| Curatorial Statement | Although there have always been mothers of the bride and groom, wedding fashions designed specifically for them were not regularly advertised in fashion magazines until the early twentieth century. As with other members of the wedding party, special attention to the clothing of the couples' parents became essential to retail operations. By 1910, gray was the preferred color worn by the mothers. |
