| Object History | Worn by Mrs. Robert S. Elder, née Harriet Newell Dewey, mother of the donors, to her wedding in 1874. |
| Curatorial Statement | This wedding dress shows that even by the late nineteenth century, non-white wedding gowns were still popular. The Museum's collection reflects the changing trend to ivory, which began in earnest in the 1890s. The style of skirt featured here is referred to as a tie-back due to internal ties that allow the wearer to adjust the fullness to her liking. When untied, the skirt is easier to store. |
