| Curatorial Statement | Born in the Dominican Republic, Oscar Aristides Renta Fiallo moved to Spain at the age of eighteen to study painting. His interests quickly changed to fashion, and he became an apprentice to Cristbal Balenciaga. In 1965, he launched his own line of clothing under the name Oscar de la Renta. Today, he is known for his flattering, sophisticated suits and glamorous evening wear. Similar to many de la Renta designs, this gown shows the influence of the Japanese Kimono. |
