| Curatorial Statement | Mainbocher was born in Chicago and later became the first of only two Americans allowed into the elite circle of Parisian haute couturiers. The crisply tailored lines of this suit are very similar to the silhouette of Mainbocher's design for the uniforms for the Girl Scouts of America as well as the Red Cross and the Navy WAVES of World War II. This suit was featured in the March 1937 issue of Harper's Bazaar, which also shows a pair of elbow-length gloves made from the same fabric as the blouse and scarf. |
