| Description | Three-piece dress, evening-style, in black silk. Blouse (a) in silk chiffon with printed pattern in dark gray; square neck line with deep v-cut in center; cord ties at neck. Three quarter length sleeves; shaped by several square pieces; black beads trim. Wrap skirt (b) in silk organza with printed pattern in light gray; black wide belt ties on right side; ankle length. Underskirt (c) in black rayon satin with layers of black net; side hook and eye closure; ankle length. |

| Object History | Worn by Mrs. Angelo Richard Arena, née Alice Paluzuelos, to the opening of the Marshall Field & Co. store in Houston, Texas in November, 1980; to the opening of the Lyric Opera in September, 1981; to dinner honoring Princess Margaret at the Casino in 1979. Last worn by Mrs. Edward Aldworth in the CHS Donors Ball 1982. Purchased at the 28 Shop at Marshall Field & Co. for $3600.00 Label says 'Zandra Rhodes' sample. Mrs. Angelo Richard Arena: b. 12/9/45; m. 3/24/68; 5'6"; 130 lbs; very dark brown hair and eyes; lt. olive complexion |
| Curatorial Statement | Zandra Lindsey Rhodes studied fashion at the Royal College of Art in London in the 1960s. She recalls, "We were determined to live in a world of today . . . creating our own environment, a perfect world of plastic, perfectly artificial." She helped put London at the forefront of international fashion in the 1970s and created clothing for Princess Diana and Freddy Mercury of the band Queen. This evening dress shows the influence of London's punk and gothic scenes. Although couture often influences street fashion, the 1960s and 1970s saw a "trickle-up" trend, when street fashion influenced couture. |
