| Object History | Worn by donor, née Lynne Walker (born 1928, married July 19, 1969 to Leo Durocher). Worn with silver sandals, diamond and pearl jewelry, and fur wrap to the Chicago Lyric Opera opening in 1976 and the Big Brothers Charity Ball at the Casino Club, Chicago in 1976. Purchased at I. Magnin, Chicago, for around $900-1200. The hem was since shortened. The donor was on the list of the Chicago Ten in the 1950s and the Best Dressed List of the Chicago Sun Times newspaper poll. |
| Curatorial Statement | This dress is from the 1970s, the most successful decade of Halston's career. Its bias-cut and draped style fits perfectly with the glamour of the disco-era. Roy Halston was born in Iowa and later moved to Chicago to attend to the School of the Art Institute. He opened a millinery studio in Chicago in the early 1950's and later moved to New York to start his dressmaking career. |
