| Object History | Worn by Mrs. Robert E. Carroll (née Harriet Bermingham, b. June 3, 1922 in Chicago; m. Sept. 27, 1950; d. Dec. 21, 1967). Mrs. Carroll purchased the dress in 1950 in New York City for her trousseau. The dress was initially sold twisted into a rope and packaged in an approximately 9" square cube. Each Delphos dress came with directions on how to protect its fine pleats. Fortuny instructed the owner to twist the gown into a loose rope, coil the rope into a ball, and store the ball in the small box provided at purchase. If the pleats came out, the owner had the option of shipping the garment back to Fortuny for repleating. |
| Curatorial Statement | Mariano Fortuny is best known as the creator of the Delphos dress, styled after classical Grecian dress. Although first created in 1907, Fortuny continued making the Delphos until his death in 1949. Many of the garments here were purchased and worn by Chicago women decades after they were originally made; some even cut inches off the hems to update the style. |
