| Object History | Worn by Mrs. Moishe Kooperman, née Sara Kozak and her granddaughter, Mrs. Thomas George Mapp née Jane Sara Cooperman (the name's spelling changed when the family came to America). Designed and made in Ukraine by Channah Kozak and her daughter Sara. Both Sara Kozak, 1871-1931, and Moishe Kooperman, 1871-1918, were born and raised in Ukraine. They married in the 1890s and eventually immigrated to Chicago at the turn of the century. As part of the assimilation process, Moishe changed his name to Max Cooperman, and eventually the family found success in the clothing production industry. The skirt was altered for second wearing by Luba Creations (Chicago). |
| Curatorial Statement | Hand stitched by the bride's mother, Channah, this dress reflects the special-occasion tradition of the village of Zvhil, were the Kozak family lived. Channah began work on the dress in 1882 when her eyesight had already started failing, and her daughter helped her finish it. The dress came with them on their journey to Chicago in the first decade of the twentieth century and was eventually worn by their granddaughter for her Chicago wedding. |
