| Object History | This evening gown was made by Mark Heister for Dorothy Fuller Englehaupt for the wedding of her son, William Englehaupt III. Mark Heister also designed the bride's and bridesmaid's dresses for the same wedding. At the time of purchase, this dress cost approximately $700 retail. Mrs. Englahaupt, née Dorothy Fuller, was born May 25, 1925, in Mason City, Iowa. She was raised in Los Angeles where she studied theater at UCLA. She met her husband William Englehaupt while working in Wichita, Kansas, and they moved to Chicago in 1948. By the end of 1948, Fuller began working at Marshall Field & Company in Evanston. She eventually became the fashion coordinator for all of the suburban stores and later moved to a position as fashion-show coordinator and assistant fashion director under Kathleen Catlin at the store's downtown location. After 10 years at Field's, she moved to Bramson-Weathered to be fashion director where she worked for one year. In 1960 she had a program called "The Fashion Show" on Channel 7. In 1963 she started her own business, Dorothy Fuller Productions Inc., that organized fashion shows all over the country. When Chicago's Apparel Center opened, Mrs. Englehaupt moved her business there. In 1989, she served as the Vice President of the International Academy of Merchandising & Design Foundation Inc. and as a member of the board of directors for the Fashion Group of Chicago and the Chicago Network. At that time, she was a member of the Rotary Club and the advisory boards for Citywide College, Harper College and the International Academy of Merchandising & Design, where a Dorothy Fuller Chair in Fashion Design has been established. At the time of writing (2007), she has served as the President of the Apparel Industry Board since its founding, eighteen years ago. |
